Learning the Life Story of a Plant
This may not be the time of year when most of our readers are outside sowing seeds, but here in Juarez the temperature has been in the upper 60s each day. Besides the moderate temperatures we also have covered garden plots that allow the garden cooperative to harvest vegetables year round.
This week the children in grades three and four of the tutoring program are learning about the life cycle of plants from their tutors Heidi, Mari and Socorro. Besides studying from textbooks the unit includes hands-on experience in the garden. Yesterday each child planted radish seeds in one of our plots which already boasts radishes ready to pull.
I strongly suspect that some of the children pushed their seeds so deep into the soil that their emergence may be very delayed. But over the next couple of weeks the children will be watering and monitoring the growth of their plants, hoping for a good harvest!
