Kindergarten Celebrates Dia de Los Reyes

January 6th, Dia de los Reyes, is the traditional end of the Christmas season and also the day when gifts are exchanged in Mexico. The feast celebrates the arrival of the Wise Men at the stable in Bethlehem.

The kindergarten children celebrated the day by hearing the story and then making their own crowns, colored, bejeweded and decorated, so that each could be king or queen for the day.

Another tradition is the sharing of a traditional cake, called rosca de reyes. The dough is shaped into a ring, then richly decorated. The circular shape represents the crowns of the kings. Before it is baked, a tiny figure of the Child Jesus is tucked into the dough. Tradition says that the finder of the figure must throw a party on February 2nd.Thanks to the generosity of friends on both sides of the border we had enough rosca de reyes for every child to receive a piece.

Thanks also to our generous supporters each child received a warm winter jacket (just in time, too, because the forecast for Monday is SNOW!) along with a bag of peanuts and an orange.
